Spiddal and the Bog

So we’ve landed in Spiddal…

Welcome to the curious little town of Spiddal in Ireland. Home to Ciara (Nemara’s sister), Eric and Conor.

They live up this road. It’s a “bohreen” (pronounced bore-reen) which presumably means “little dirt road off the main road that looks like this”.

At the top of the bohreen is “The Bog”. Yep, you read correctly “The Bog”. See that black stuff behind me? It’s peat. The whole area is full of it and it gets harvested by the locals who burn it for heat in the winter.

It takes some getting used to people saying things like: “I’m heading up the bohreen to visit the Bog”…

There are houses that look like they come out of a box:

The locals appear to be nice too. Quite helpful in fact.

And the area provides quite a varied opportunity for “Portrait of Dara montages” whilst trying (very successfully I might add) to teach Nemara how to use the big scary camera. She did well!
