Baptism by Italians

Before we left the sunny shores of Oz we made a promise. Yes we would be in the little village of Castle di Franco – north of Venice on the 29th of September for the Baptism of Gaia Grace… Born a month before our departure to Sonia and Diego – our Sydney Italian amigos. So we did have one date to keep and by nook or cranny we would be there!

With Italians everything is larger than life – especially their energies! Sonia and Diego are themselves energy incorporated – so add in the extended mix of families with Italian mamas, papas, sisters, brothers, aunties, uncles, cousins, friends, food, wine, stories, and yes it was a monumental day!

Unable to converse with most of the guests at the ‘afterparty’, being handicapped by my very limited Italian and Dara busy being as the now unofficial-official photographer, I decided to don an apron and pretend to be the hired help.

This tactic worked well, as coupled with a few glasses of Proscecco the Italian language sounded more familiar to the ear and I was soon being bossed around by guests galore demanding their glasses be refilled, plates be piled with roast suckling pig, dishes be removed and desert be delivered pronto. It was joyous and an absolute hoot.

Gaia Grace looked like she enjoyed most of her day – a couple of obligatory tears when the chilly baptismal water hit her brow at the church but otherwise she held the composure of a smiling mini princess till bedtime.
Dara’s pictures tell the lovely story of the day much better than any words so over to them and many thanks to our old and new friends for making us feel so welcome!
